Praise for “lab coat superstars”

The “lab-coat superstars” of biomedical science have delivered for the country during the pandemic, said Lord Bethell.

The Minister for Innovation praised the profession in a video he posted on social media yesterday.

The clip was watched more than 10,000 times in a matter of hours.

He praised the “often unseen” workforce and said it has been central to the UK’s response to COVID-19.

He concluded: “That’s why I want to say a massive thank you to all those involved in biomedical science, on this Biomedical Science Day.”

Lord Bethell was one of a number of politicians who took to social media on the day to praise and thank biomedical scientists.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock, tweeted: “This #BiomedicalScienceDay2021 I want to pay tribute to all those working incredibly hard in biomedical sciences within the UK and especially in our fantastic NHS. Your incredible work has been central to our fight against the virus.”

While Bell Ribeiro-Addy, MP for Streatham, also praised the profession: “Today on #BiomedicalScienceDay2021, I'm saying a special thank you to all the biomedical scientists out there. Behind every NHS test, there’s a whole team of scientists and lab staff, like my constituents Emerencia, Jemma and Monika, working away #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare”.

Alongside the politicians, there were numerous health bodies, organisations and government departments paying tribute.

Just a few of these included Department of Health in Northern Ireland, Public Health England, NHS England and NHS Improvement, among many others.

Public Health England’s post on Twitter said: “Today is #BiomedicalScienceDay2021 We want to say a big thank you to all Biomedical Scientists, Clinical Scientists and laboratory staff who work at PHE and beyond. You are #AtTheHeartOfHealthcare.”

Alongside these words they also tweeted a video about starting a career in biomedical science, which was watched thousands of times.
