Job Summary

  • Work in a medical laboratory to provide high quality testing.
  • Perform all technical methods to a high standard and ensure quality is maintained at all times.
  • Provide supervision of technical services by liaison with Director of Lab Operations and supervise activities of BMS and non-BMS staff as required.
  • Provide training and supervision of staff in all laboratory techniques and processes.
  • Lead troubleshooting, service developments and implementation of new processes and techniques.
  • Perform and review audits, be an active participate in Quality Management activities
  • Take a lead role in the local implementation of QMS or Training in accordance with ISO 15189:2012, as specified in separate job role.

Job Requirements

Incumbent should ideally possess the following knowledge, skills and experience.

  • HCPC State Registration.
  • Broad experience of the major Histology and Cytology preparatory techniques.
  • Experience and knowledge of immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Have worked in a Quality Driven organisation accredited by UKAS according to ISO15189:2012.
  • Ability to maintain a calm demeanour under pressure and acts professionally at all times, providing leadership to others as required
  • Some experience in training and supervision of staff.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, proven ability to work within a team.
  • An understanding of laboratory IT systems, some knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Be able to travel independently to satellite laboratory locations.

Job Accountabilities

Laboratory Testing

  • To perform all Histopathology technical procedures in use in the department to a high quality standard.
  • To perform Non-Gynae cytology procedures in use in the department to a high quality standard.
  • Knowledge and experience in immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Be proficient in the use and understand all functions of the laboratory data processing systems.
  • To support provision of the extended hours service to meet operational requirements as appropriate.
  • Provide intra-operative technical services at offsite locations.
  • To advise the Director of Lab Operations of any technical or operational problems as they arise and offer solutions.

Staff Supervision

  • Lead by example to supervise and motivate the staff
  • Provide supervision, mentoring and advising of other staff as required.
  • Assist with implementation of new processes and techniques.
  • Inform Laboratory Director of Lab Operations of technical and personnel issues.

Staff Training

  • Assist in organising training and competency assessment of staff ensuring compliance with company and professional body requirements.
  • Participate in training of staff at all levels both internally and externally as required.
  • Assist in designing and implementing training schedules, programmes and sessions to meet the requirements of the Company and the IBMS.

Quality Processes

  • Be involved in service quality improvements.
  • Assist with the writing and review of procedures and Methods
  • Organise testing of NEQAS materials and download results
  • Provide data analysis and reports to support the various company meetings as required.

Acting Up & Additional Duties

  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by Team Leader or other senior staff members.
  • In absence of Director of Lab Operations provide operational, managerial and quality assurance information to Management, as and if required.
  • Perform and support Director of Lab Operations with annual appraisal of staff as appropriate
  • Liaise with persons and clients and personnel at all levels both internal and external as required.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

  • Participate in CPS through appropriate institution.
  • Remain aware of scientific or other advances relevant to work of the section.
  • Develop and maintain skills and knowledge appropriate to the post by undertaking training, attending meetings and conferences.
  • Understand and apply the site Safety, Environmental Policy, Safety Management System and relevant legal safety  & Environmental requirements

Health & Safety

  • All staff must be familiar with the safety, environmental rules and procedures applying to their job and take reasonable care for their own safety and that of other people.
  • Associates must use the control measures and personal protective equipment provided, report any safety related deficiencies and contribute to improving accident and safety performance.
